2024 NBA free agency: Sixers interested in signing Marcus Morris nba,free,agency,sixers,interested,in,signing,marcus,morris,liberty,ballers,front-page,76ers-free-agency-rumors-news

As NBA free agency continues, with various role players still up for grabs, the Sixers are looking to improve their forward depth. They’ve already had discussions with two Heat free agents in Caleb Martin and former Sixer Haywood Highsmith, and now another former Sixer has entered the mix.

As Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported, the Sixers have expressed interest in signing Marcus Morris.

According to Pompey, the Pistons, Hornets, Cavaliers, Mavericks, Heat, and Timberwolves have also expressed some interest in Morris.

Morris spent 37 games with the Sixers last season, before being sent to San Antonio as part of the Buddy Hield trade. Morris was waived soon after and went on to sign with the Cavs for the rest of the season. During his short stretch in Philadelphia, Morris averaged 6.7 points and 2.9 rebounds with a 40 percent stroke from three in 17.2 minutes per game.

For a team that still needs help at the 4 and could benefit from having some extra size and shooting there, the 6-foot-8 Morris makes a little sense. He’s shot 40.3 percent from three over the last five years on solid volume, and could bring a touch of rebounding. But the positives pretty much run out there. At nearly 35 years of age, Morris is slowing down even more and was clearly an issue on defense with the Sixers already last season. He struggled to keep in front of anyone with much pace and failed to stay engaged and be in the right spots off the ball too often.

If Morris is just an end-of-bench piece for the regular season as a shooter with size, fine. He shouldn’t cost more than a minimum deal either. But if he’s being considered as a notable rotation piece or a candidate to play in the playoffs, the Sixers should look elsewhere at this point.

Both Martin and Highsmith are much better targets, with the latter having the ability to help play more at the 4. In terms of talent and general two-way reliability, there’s no doubt those two should be targeted over Morris.

2024 NBA free agency: Big Penguin returns — the Sixers are reportedly signing Andre Drummond nba,free,agency,big,penguin,returns,the,sixers,are,reportedly,signing,andre,drummond,liberty,ballers,front-page

The Philadelphia 76ers may be all in on pursuing Paul George. And Nico Batum might already be on the way out.

But one name you’ll most certainly be familiar with is now reportedly returning. Andre “Big Penguin” Drummond is signing a two-year, $10M deal, league sources told Hoops Hype’s Michael Scotto.

Scotto adds that Dummond gets a player option for the second year. The two-time All-Star played for the Sixers during the 2021-2022 season before he was included in the Ben Simmon-James Harden blockbuster, packing his bags for Brooklyn. By all accounts Drummond loved his time in Philadelphia, and the team loved the energy he brought both on and off the floor.

Moments before Scotto’s report made it official, Drummond offered us this fun clue:

It’s a terrific low-cost signing to bolster the backup center spot. As we know all too well the Sixers tend to hemorrhage points whenever Joel Embiid sits down or misses a game. Drummond’s name should already be up there with the best backups of Embiid’s career thus far. Now he’ll get another chance to prove he’s the top reserve for Joel.

Although Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer just said that No. 41 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Adem Bona, could be coming for that title as well.

All eyes are still on Paul George, but the Sixers still had the bandwidth to make some key value signings for their bench.

Last season season in Chicago, the 30-year-old averaged 8.4 points and 9.0 rebounds appearing in 79 games. For those keeping score in fantasy, that amounts to a monstrous 19 rebounds per 36 minutes. And if you’ve blocked this from your memory, the Sixers couldn’t rebound the basketball very well against the Knicks in the playoffs and got absolutely smoked whenever Embiid sat down. Drummond should plug a big roster gap in that regard.

This does leave Paul Reed’s future with the Sixers in doubt. The 25-year-old’s contract is not guaranteed for the 2024-25 season. With the reported signing of Drummond, it feels likely that the Sixers will not carry Reed’s $7.7 million cap hit on their books.

2024 NBA free agency: Knicks lock in core by reportedly re-signing OG Anunoby nba,free,agency,knicks,lock,in,core,by,reportedly,re,signing,og,anunoby,liberty,ballers,front-page,nba-rumors-news

Well, the Sixers’ options for high-level wing players are dropping like flies.

Less than 24 hours after trading just about every possible first-round pick for Mikal Bridges, the New York Knicks bolstered up their squad by re-signing wing OG Anunoby to a five-year, $212.5 million dollar extension, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

This doesn’t come as a huge shock, as many reports in the past few days pointed to Anunoby’s return to the team that acquired him at the trade deadline. The Knicks taking a week once the season ended to get this extension done — and their hesitancy to give him a fifth year and over $40 million per year — had some believing he may look elsewhere.

The Sixers were one of the team’s rumored to be interested in Anunoby’s services.Whether they had much of a chance to sign him is another thing. SNY’s Ian Begley reported that Anunoby received max offers from other teams but chose to stay with the Knicks.

It locks the Knicks into this core. After this signing and the Bridges trade, they are essentially all tapped out of assets.

The Sixers on the other hand, remain with all their cap space in place, and they don’t have to worry about paying $42 million a year to a player who’s never made an All-Star game and has nagging injury concerns every season. They will have to field a team at some point though, and time and players are running out.

Report: Sixers’ interest in signing Clippers’ Paul George ‘has significantly waned’ report,sixers,interest,in,signing,clippers,paul,george,has,significantly,waned,liberty,ballers,front-page,76ers-free-agency-rumors-news

Well, the smoke that was surrounding Paul George and him possibly signing with the Sixers might not produce a flame.

Shams Charania of The Athletic is reporting that the Sixers’ interest in pursuing the nine-time All-Star “has significantly waned in recent days.”

Numerous reports have surfaced this week that appear to be pointing towards a divorce between George and the Los Angeles Clippers, making this latest news fairly surprising. It appeared as if the Sixers had a legitimate shot at landing the veteran wing that Joel Embiid seemed to covet.

That leads us to one obvious question: What does Daryl Morey have up his sleeve?

Almost immediately after the Sixers were eliminated by the Knicks, ESPN Insider Brian Windhorst named three star-level players the team would pursue: George, Jimmy Butler and Brandon Ingram. With George seemingly crossed off the list, are we looking at a pivot to these trade options? While there hasn’t been much noise surrounding the Heat and a trade of Butler, a report from The Athletic’s Kelly Iko said that the Pelicans shopped Ingram to both the Rockets and Sixers.

If you’re looking at other free agents, the Sixers have also recently been linked to the Knicks’ OG Anunoby and Nuggets’ Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Anunoby is seemingly destined to re-sign with New York considering the president of basketball operations is the father of Anunoby’s agent, but perhaps the Sixers see a path to reuniting the veteran wing with his former coach, Nick Nurse. Caldwell-Pope has proven to be one of the better perimeter defenders in the NBA and has two championship rings on his resume. With Denver approaching the vaunted second apron in a hurry, KCP could hit the open market.

Perhaps the Alex Caruso-Josh Giddey trade will open the floodgates on trade season or maybe we’ll have to wait until next week’s draft to get a clearer picture of the Sixers’ plan.
